Permaculture Ideas: Introduction to Permaculture FULL COURSE. Confronting the Context: Permaculture and Capitalism | Liberation Ecology. I’ve written before about the challenges faced by permaculture enterprises. Farms, like other land-based permaculture projects, are faced with the formidable task of regenerating ecosystems and communities, while surviving in a system that rewards the destruction of the same systems. Permaculture projects have to compete with degenerative enterprises and institutions that are happy to take the efficiency ‘bonus’ from unsustainable and exploitative practices.

The consequence is that it’s hard for permaculture enterprises to keep costs as low, and therefore people with less of an economic buffer, who have to minimize costs as much as possible, find it hard to support regenerative enterprises as consumers. That’s most of the world, in case you were wondering. So the regenerative enterprises that we would like to create have a difficult time offering products and services that most people can afford, and most people can’t afford to support the regenerative economy. Rafter Emily ©Erik Schmitz. Surfin' StrawBale. WOMAD: A vegan debate - Sustainable Food Trust. What to eat Last weekend I was invited as a guest of the sustainable energy company, Ecotricity, to speak at WOMAD, on the role of livestock in sustainable food systems.

I was there to make the case for the benefits of sustainable livestock farming, whilst my opposition, Jasmijn de Boo of the Vegan Society, was promoting a vegan diet for a sustainable future. We need more vegans and vegetarians I don’t consider myself to be an extreme ‘pro-carnivore’ and I firmly believe that society’s relationship with meat needs some serious reconsideration. Collectively we eat far too much meat. Eating meat every day, often twice a day, has become commonplace. An estimated 60 billion land animals are killed each year to satisfy our desire for cheap meat.

Conscious carnivore However, as much as I agree that we need to eat less meat generally, I am also comfortable with my role as a meat-eater. Taking a life is a meaningful act. Vegan philosophy The morality of meat and the pleasure of taste. Unit for Sale - The Postlip Community. Springhill Cohousing Stroud. Project Once the land had been purchased for Springhill cohousing, the development began within a short space of time. Planning permission was granted for 35 custom-built houses and flats in June 2001; building started in August 2002; and the first residents moved in during the summer and autumn of 2003.

The land cost a total of £550,000 and the overall cost to build the homes was £4.5million. Potential residents were offered a choice of a three, four or five-bedroom house or a one or two-bedroom flat. They were then asked to buy 5000 shares (valued at £1), which would be refunded on completion of the project. Residents became part of the free-holding development company and each would subsequently have a say in the site development. The ethos of cohousing is firmly embedded in generating a sense of community, but most people who live in such places are also environmentally aware, practicing sustainable behaviours such as recycling. Urbanite - Reusing Old Concrete. By Sarah Tate, ConcreteNetwork.com Columnist With the desire to live in an eco-friendly fashion at its height, people are looking for creative ways to reuse old building materials in new construction. One such material is urbanite, or broken up pieces of concrete that can be reused in a variety of ways. While, using urbanite for a project requires extra human effort, it keeps waste concrete from filling up landfills and requires little or no production energy. Urbanite is a term that refers to broken pieces of unwanted concrete leftover from a demolition project. Urbanite can be locally sourced at construction sites or found on Craigslist, and is usually free if you are willing to haul it away. Bloggers interested in sustainable building materials have reported using urbanite for patios, walkways, flower beds, fire pits, retaining walls and other outdoor structures.

Urbanite can be used to create a patio or walkway that looks similar to flagstone. Return to Concrete Demolition. Green Product Category: Foundations, Footers, and Slabs. Welcome to the May T. Watts Appreciation Society C&D Page. The Greenest Building is the One Already Built When a building is torn down, most of the the demolition debris ends up in a landfill. Some goes to Construction & Demoltion (C&D) landfills, others to landfills that handle Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). Where it goes depends on your location. Where we live, Illinois, there are only three active C&D Landfills, as reported by the EPA. In 1996—the most current C&D figures are now over a decade old—the EPA reports that construction and demolition generated an estimated 136 million tons of waste. It is believed that 20-30% was recycled, avoiding a landfill. To use the calculator, begin by choosing your property type from the top row.

The U.S. We can easily convert the tons of waste into the number of years it would take a single person to generate an equivalent amount of trash. Reich's theories held that deficits or constrictions in bodily orgone were at the root of many diseases—including cancer—much as deficits or constrictions in the libido could produce neuroses in Freudian theory. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine lists orgone as a type of "putative energy".[12] There is no empirical support for the concept of orgone in medicine or the physical sciences,[6][dead link] and research into the concept ceased with the end[when?]

Tea is something I drink every single day. It’s sacred at my house – I even have a whole drawer devoted to it!

I drink it because it is amazing for your health. There are so many varieties of tea that can improve digestion, metabolism and even prevent certain diseases. This investigation into tea ingredients has been in the making for a long time. What I’m about to share with you totally rocked my world forever and I’ll never look at tea in the same way again. The ancient Chinese tradition of drinking tea dates back thousand of years to the early Chinese dynasties and aristocrats who drank the beverage for its medicinal properties.

Conventional Teas – An Abundance of Pesticides Did you know that most tea is not washed before it is put it into bags? Stinging Nettle’s has a remarkable ability to rebuild and restore. Part of this comes from the fact that it is intensely nutritive, being dense with minerals, vitamins and antioxidants.

Nettle’s nourishing properties have been discussed at length by many authors, perhaps most notably (and infamously) by Susun Weed in her excellent book, Healing Wise. A less explored aspect of this common plant, is its capacity as an adaptogen and adrenal trophorestorative. “Trophorestorative: An herb that nourishes, strengthens, and tonifies a specific organ or function. And “Adaptogen: A substance that helps a living organism adapt to stress (environmental, physical, or psychological) My personal experiences with Nettle would indicate that both of the above terms suit this remarkable plant very well.

I’ve also written about Nettles several times over the last year, and here’s a list of a few of those posts: Promoting car-free developments. Option: Promoting ‘car-free’ (and ‘low car’) developments using local parking powers and planning obligations. Reduced car ownership and reduced on-street or off-street parking can have major benefits for local residents by reducing air pollution, noise levels and improving the attraction of the area for local walking, cycling and play. Reduced land for parking also allows the construction of more dwellings. ‘Car-free’ residential developments should be considered in dense urban areas where residents are well served by public transport.

Private Developers can chose not to provide to private off-street parking places or a local authority may require a developer to comply with an agreement not to provide off-street parking as part of planning consent. Action by the local authority will be necessary to prevent on-street parking at that location, or overspill to nearby areas. The law Links to guidance Case study How? Background In the UK and across the World, relentlessly rising congestion levels have been impacting on the quality of life, especially in large urban centres like London. carfree Developments are a direct and innovative response to the challenge of a sustainable transport future.

Often designed in conjunction with other congestion reducing measures (e.g. car clubs, lift share schemes etc) carfree housing developments have recently increased substantially and come in a variety of configurations. Local authorities and other planning bodies are directly contributing to this process through a range of incentives to developers. These include use of section 106 planning legislation. This facilitates granting of planning consent when new developments include carfree or low car provision.

This website is an outline guide to some of these developments in the capital. Wherever possible all entries include links to relevant contacts and further information. Intérpretes: John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Victor McLaglen, Barry Fitzgerald.

2. But once you go back before the 1800s, sleep starts to look a lot different. Your ancestors slept in a way that modern sleepers would find bizarre – they slept twice. And so can you. The History The existence of our sleeping twice per night was first uncovered by Roger Ekirch, professor of History at Virginia Tech. His research found that we didn’t always sleep in one eight hour chunk. References are scattered throughout literature, court documents, personal papers, and the ephemera of the past. “It’s not just the number of references – it is the way they refer to it, as if it was common knowledge,” Ekirch says. An English doctor wrote, for example, that the ideal time for study and contemplation was between “first sleep” and “second sleep.” Ekirch’s book At Day’s Close: Night in Times Past is replete with such examples. But just what did people do with these extra twilight hours? Until about 1990. 1. The Other Schools of Thought: Magnetism and etheric fields.

Although seemingly contradictory to the popular opinion of the masses, the apparently empty space all around us is far from without substance or use. Air is not simply just a source of oxygen, an empty space for inhabiting, a condition of climate or weather, or a space in which gases and such can feel free to operate within: it is a primary factor in the make up of life and existence as we know it, a contributory factor in; occult health agenda's/concerns and the mediation of thoughts, feelings, invisible natural laws and electro magnetic transmissions. Research into the technologies of HAARP will show you that these very signals are now known to be picked up upon by the brain; thus the brain is fully cable of receiving transmissions through the airwaves and acting upon them subconsciously. When taking an occult view point, one with a belief in the spirit realm could relate to the concept of magnetism and understand how things we can not see may not be entirely indivisible.
