Description: Glasgow City Council, in partnership with nine Merchant City-based visual arts organisations, is leading the development of a major visual arts resource for the city - Trongate 103. The project recognises the importance of the city's independent visual art sector and aims to provide a secure base for the development of the visual arts in Glasgow, its artists and its audiences. Trongate 103 provides a creative hub, acting as a dynamic focus on contemporary visual art.
It is capable of supporting world-class artists and enabling them to sustain and develop their careers. At the same time, the building offers opportunities to the wider community to participate in the visual arts in an environment that values the creativity of all people. Trongate 103 offers a wide range of opportunities for professional artists and non-artists alike. It is a place to see, learn, make, talk about and explore art. The building work was completed in July 2009. Elder and Cannon Architects. Trongate 103, Merchant City, Glasgow As the first phase of a redevelopment programme to create an Arts Quarter on the southern edge of the Merchant City within Glasgow city centre, Trongate 103 has been formed as a new creative hub giving access to linked galleries, a restaurant, exhibition areas and workshops, as well as providing visitors with an introduction to a large cross section of the arts in Glasgow.
The site consisted of 3 B-listed buildings, which needed a substantial quantity of repairwork internally and externally, as well as the upgrading of services prior to any significant internal alterations could begin. At street level, the building has been opened up with the introduction of full height shop-front glazing on all elevations to allow a much more accessible relationship with the streetscape and to encourage public interaction with the building, Amelia Street | Architecture Foundation. Competitions & Awards The Architecture Foundation is working alongside urban development and investment company, First Base, to run a competition to choose an architect for the transformation of the public realm in the area adjoining the proposed ‘Printworks’ development on Amelia Street, London, adjacent to the Pullens Estate. It is recognised that there is an opportunity to make significant improvements to an area with a distinctive character, and to create a model for future transformations of public spaces in major regeneration areas such as Elephant and Castle.
This project is to be in fulfilment of a section 106 agreement reached with the London Borough of Southwark. Scope of project The scope of the project is design for the public realm. It includes any of the materials and objects within the public realm such as the street and pavement surfaces, thresholds, lighting, planting, signage, local spatial reconfiguration, seating, landscaping, rubbish bins, cycle racks, recycling etc.
