The A to Z of computer music: B. Computer Music goes below the bonnet in this month's lexical supplement, demystifying yet more digital audio bits and bobs.

Balance Adjusting the balance of a stereo signal means changing the amplitude of the left and right signals. It can be used to change the 'position' of an audio signal in the stereo field, though it takes its name from the corrective use of giving each channel equal strength, to 'balance' and centralise the signal. Officially, balance differs from panning in that the former will silence the right channel if panned hard-left, while the latter will bring the two together in the left channel. In fact, the pan knobs in most DAWs and plugins actually function like a balance control! Balanced connections A system using balanced connections (cables, equipment, input/output connections, etc) will be less susceptible to unwanted interference such as mains hum and can maintain a clear audio signal over longer distances than its unbalanced counterpart.

Whether you’re a graphics artist wanting to make music in new ways or just trying to rationalize the purchase of a shiny new Wacom tablet, graphics tablets are worth a look for music control.

They’re highly sensitive, intuitive instruments, and they’re fairly cheap (US$100 and up). We’ve talked about doing this before, but new and updated software keeps making this easier. Windows: Nicholas Fournel writes to tell us he’s just uploaded two new applications for Windows, for free. WMIDI converts tablet input to MIDI, with full support for Z angle and tilt; Theremin takes the next step and turns that into a musical instrument. Nicholas has a lot of other fun stuff, including apps for painting with sound, granulating, glove using, and touch screen-inating. Mac: Tablet-to-music apps have a tendency to become vaporware. The next challenge: make the tablet expressive as an instrument. If you use any of these tools, do let us know how it goes — successes and frustrations alike.

Max For Live. Data/Debt has released a new Ableton Live/Max For Live device called the APC Mono Sequencer.

It adds Akai APC 40 hardware control to the Live 9 Mono Sequencer. According to the developer, ‘It makes sequencing bass lines an absolute joy’. Continue reading Ableton has released Time and Timbre, a Max for Live percussion instrument and ‘time engine’ that they say is the result of three years of development by the duo Skinnerbox. The pack consists of five individual drum synthesis modules (Timbre) and a polymetric sequencer (Time), as well as a built-in mastering plug-in (Master Blaster). Pure Data: another integrated computer music environment

Reprinted from Proceedings, Second Intercollege Computer Music Concerts, Tachikawa, pp. 37-41. May 7, 1997 Abstract A new software system, called Pure Data, is in the early stages of development. 1 Introduction The design of real-time computer music systems has been a subject of active research since the RTSKED program [1]. Making software systems which were really usable by non-computer scientists was addressed by the Max program [4]. As soon as Philippe Manoury's Pluton was realized using Max (thus proving Max to be an interesting environment for real-time computer music), a stream of criticisms of Max started to appear.

The question of how to use Max to amass and use data arose in IRCAM during the design phase of the ISPW.
