The Hall of Mirrors, the King's Grand Apartments, the Museum of the History of France: over the centuries, the Château de Versailles, the country's seat of power until 1789, continued to grow and be embellished. It started out as a modest hunting lodge built for Louis XIII. Yet this was the site chosen by Louis XIV to build the palace that we now know, the symbol of royal absolutism and the embodiment of French classical art.

The comprehensive virtual tour allows the visitor to take a virtual, self-guided, room-by-room walking tour of the whole museum. The visitor can navigate from room to room either by using a floor map or by following blue arrow links connecting the rooms. Camera icons indicate hotspots where the visitor can get a close-up on a particular object or exhibit panel. Please note: When viewing the presentation in full screen mode, only your current floor is available on the floor map. In order to move to a different floor you will need to exit full screen mode, use the map to select a different room on a different floor, then re-enter full screen mode. This presentation of individual panoramas provides the visitor a list of links to panoramic images of the individual rooms within the museum.

PLEASE NOTE: The Virtual Museum offers a tour through the Oriental Institute Museum galleries as they appeared prior to being closed for a major renovation and expansion project in 1996. The New Egyptian Gallery , the New Persian Gallery , and the New Mesopotamian Gallery have been completely redesigned and are now open to the public. The remaining two galleries will open over the next several years.
