The salt hotel. Salar de Uyuni, Uyuni, Bolivia Dario Lora, manager of Luna Salada Salt Hotel: The hotel is unique. It is made of salt, it is like a museum. You can sleep in a bed made of salt bricks, you have the desk made of salt bricks, you have the floor made of salt, everything made of salt! It’s the biggest salt flat in the whole world having a stretch of twelve thousand kilometres.

We select this location in the hill so we have a really nice landscape of the salt flat. Here in the hotel we are in a high altitude. [Dario Lora speaks to the chef in Spanish - At altitude around 18 to 20 minutes and 8 to 10 minutes at sea level.] All the salt that we use in the dishes came from the salt flat. One of the biggest challenges we have is the rainy season is because the weather destroys all the salt bricks.

I am excited to be part of the hotel. Chris Hadfield's Space Kitchen.

How to make guacamole. My name is Elki. Welcome to Wahaca. Today we’re going to do guacamole, a traditional nibble in Mexico. We’re going to start with the, eh, avocados. To do guacamole we need to choose ripe avocados. Tomato. Now we’re going to go to white onion. Then we’re going to go for chillies. Then we’re going to go for a little bit of green coriander. Then, a little bit of garlic. We’re going to add some olive oil, pinch of salt, Tabasco sauce and, because we used tomato, we’re just going to make the tomato more friendly to our palate using a little bit of sugar. And then, from the centre, without squeezing the tomatoes, the chillies and the onions, we bring everything together.

New Years 2015

Saying boo to a sloth! David Attenborough: In this tree there is one of the most extraordinary plant predators. It’s one animal that I don’t need to sneak up on … Boo! This extraordinary creature is half-blind, half-deaf and this is just about as fast as it can move. That’s what’s going to happen to you if you live on nothing but leaves! It’s a sloth. It’s not exactly an enthusiastic leaf eater - a couple of half-hearted chews and the leaves go straight down to its stomach.

Leaves however are not easily digested. The sloth’s technique is to give them time. Leaves are not very nutritious. In the time it takes me to write a few letters, the sloth just about manages to groom itself.

Move Eat Learn. You’ve got to have a dream: a free downloadable lesson. A free downloadable lesson, based around a Russian advertising video for shampoo. Despite what is aims to sell, the video is actually quite inspiring, with the story of a girl who succeeds against the odds through pure grit and determination. Students start by watching the video and trying to guess what it is trying to advertise (so don’t tell them!). They then try to reconstruct the story in pairs, watching the video again to check their ideas. The lesson then goes on to focus on a range of linkers used to give reasons or results, make contrasts and show when something happened.

Students then work with some vocabulary to describe personality, and then put it all together by writing the story of the video, using the linkers and the vocabulary where appropriate. Finally, there are some quotes about success for them to discuss. The lesson would be suitable from B1 upwards.
