Reviews for Functional Programming Principles in Scala. Absolutely phenomenal course.

Reviews for Functional Programming Principles in Scala

It taught me the fun, conciseness, and promise of functional programming through learning the Scala language. Scala is very interesting in that it is a fusion of functional and object-oriented programming paradigms. So you can define your own types and classes as in Java, but you can write these in a functional, elegant, and very concise way (many functions in the course are only 1 or 2 lines -- sometimes very hard-earned, however!). Anyone interested should see Martin Odersky's YouTube talk "Working Hard to Keep It Simple.

" Martin Odersky is a very effective teacher, extremely knowledgeable (not only invented Scala but wrote the most recent Java compiler) and most importantly is very "into" this field. The course left me with the impression that not only can Scala be used in the real world (after the initial steep learning curve, that is) but also it is such a great teaching tool. A Review of Japan's Higher Education System: Looking at McVeigh's Book Japanese Higher Education as Myth

McVeigh. Japanese Higher Education as Myth. Armonk, New York: M.E. Sharpe,2002. 318pp. Brian J. The answer is yes. McVeigh's thesis is radical, in that it goes to the root of the problem, asserting that Japanese daigaku possess none of the attributes commonly associated with higher education, such as the capacity to "generate knowledge that previously did not exist" (p. 238). But if "education does not appear to be the primary purpose at an astounding number of Japan's universities" (p. 26), then what is their primary purpose? McVeigh is not a historian, which is a breath of fresh air. What makes McVeigh's narrative so readable are the personal accounts of daigaku life from his teaching experience in Japan, and through faculty interviews and from listening to the words of students.
