Ask small children what they want to be when they grow up and they are likely to respond with “firefighter,” “vet,” or “astronaut.” Odds are not very likely that they will respond, “grant writer.” Who among us ever intended to be this? I am frequently asked how I got into this line of work. “Wrong place, wrong time” is what I usually quip, but the reality is probably similar for many of us; it’s just something that I sort of fell in to. Although I inadvertently got relevant degrees and spent most of my graduate program researching and writing, I thought I was going to be a teacher. I didn’t even know what a grant was until halfway through my master’s program when I was asked to help write one. The class was held at a university extension site located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
Proper mentorship can compensate for many missed classes. In an ideal world you would end up with a mentor who just happens to be there right when you need them to be. Knowledge.
