Health Futures | Strategic Innovation Lab. By prioritizing the human experience of both the patient and the healthcare professional, emphasizing inclusive design, human factors, and human-environment interactions, the design community is positioned to positively impact the health and wellness domain. Design thinking can help us understand adaptation to innovation and appropriation of new technology, provide design strategies and methodologies for risk reduction and cognitive support, and aid in developing techniques for design practitioners to better engage with stakeholders in clinical design contexts. At Strategic Innovation Lab (sLab), a number of people have chosen to explore current and future challenges in healthcare from a design and innovation perspective.

The first meetings of this group focus on collaboration around the theme of healthcare journeys. February 2006 – May 2007Access the Demand Forecasting website Background As more money is made available for the development and purchase of products that are needed to diagnose, prevent and treat leading causes of death and disability in developing countries, the need to improve demand forecasting comes into sharp relief. Shortcomings in demand forecasting increase the risks for suppliers, resulting in higher costs, supply shortages and concerns about the long-term viability of investing in R&D for health products that would benefit the developing world.

Demand forecasting also limits the ability of donors and national health programs to spend dollars effectively to save lives. Developing better demand forecasts for critical medical technologies in the developing world requires collaboration and investment from all of the key stakeholders in the value chain for these products, and it will also benefit each of them in turn. Conclusions. About RWJF. Centre for Innovation in Complex Care | Projects. Our innovation and research projects bring together the expertise of our members to implement leading edge solutions and evaluate them in a real clinical environment. The process of developing a project always begins with the identification of a problem by our frontline staff or our patients.

The CICC project team then does a thorough analysis of the problem and makes recommendations for how to address it. When the decision to start a new project is made, the appropriate resources and expertise for implementation and evaluation are brought together. The CICC team is always looking for project ideas so if you have a problem that you would like analyzed, contact the team at: cicc@uhn.on.ca. The ebd approach (experience based design) - NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement. The ebd approach (experience based design) is an exciting new way of bringing patients and staff together to share the role of improving care and re-designing services. It is being developed by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement as a way of helping frontline NHS teams make the improvements their patients really want.

While leading global companies have used similar approaches for years, the ebd approach is very new for the NHS. Where it has been used in the health service, it is having amazing results - delivering the sort of care that leave patients feeling safer, happier and more valued, and making staff feel more positive, rewarded and empowered. Due to continued demand, we are delivering a new masterclass, which will introduce key concepts of the ebd approach will be suitable for anyone considering how to optimise the use of patient experience in designing and improving healthcare. From Ehealthwiki Values refer to the improvements stakeholders want to realize in healthcare[1][2]. Improvements can be assessed at two levels: better health & wellbeing better healthcare delivery Better health & wellbeing Improved clinical values: dietary values, HbA1c, blood pressure, etc.

Improved quality of life: social functioning, general or mental health, well-being Improved lifestyle (self-care) behavior: change in attitude and increased knowledge, behavioral intention, and actual behavior - improved compliance with advice: patient’s adherence to treatment - improved disease control: increased ability to control disease via self- monitoring, education, personal feedback Decreased mortality Decreased morbidity Better health care delivery Increased access: - increased availability (healthcare at all times) - increased possibilities (healthcare is provided in many forms) - improved equity (healthcare is available for everyone) Increased efficiency: Increased safety: - error reduction.

Back to Table of Contents | February 2011 Five Payment Models: The Pros, the Cons, the Potential By Janet Silversmith on behalf of the MMA Work Group to Advance Health Care Reform ■ Among the leading strategies to reform health care is the development and implementation of new payment models.

The goal is to change the way physicians, hospitals, and other care providers are paid in order to emphasize higher quality at lower costs—in other words, to improve value. In an effort to build on its health care reform activities that began in 2005, the Minnesota Medical Association convened a work group in 2010 to develop recommendations on how payment reform can best be advanced. Among the work group’s output was a comparative review of five payment models with respect to how they can support a value-driven health care system.

Several different perspectives can be used to evaluate payment models. There are, of course, negative features associated with fee-for-service payment. References1. Model for Future Health Care Services | Developing Better Services | DHSSPS(NI) Under DBS we are working to develop a model of health care which will provide high quality, safe services which are accessible for all and provided by well trained, motivated staff in modern settings. Over the next twenty years two distinct forces will define the shape of our health services, namely: Greater provision of generalist services within communities or on a day-patient or out-patient basis than is the case at present. These will include primary care services, chronic disease management, social services maintaining and enhancing independence, and much of the surgery currently provided on an inpatient basis.

Greater specialisation particularly within acute hospital services. This will promote the quality of services by ensuring that professionals deal with a ‘critical mass’ of similar cases to achieve sufficient expertise. New specialised medical technologies and techniques will keep more people alive who would otherwise die through illness or trauma. Open health innovation. Working with patients to improve health care This toolkit outlines a powerful and proven way of improving patients' experience of services, and helps you to understand how it can help you meet your aims. A 2013 global survey discovered that EBCD projects had either been implemented, or were being planned in more than 60 health care organisations, in countries including Australia, Canada, England, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and the United States. As well as step-by-step guidance, the toolkit includes videos of people who have taken part in EBCD projects.

These help bring to life the successes and range of benefits that can result from implementing this type of improvement project. The toolkit also includes downloadable resources such as template forms, letters, presentations and other materials, to help you plan and carry out this approach. This latest version of the toolkit was produced in 2013. Digital health meets consumer electronics and brain training. There’s no doubt that the biggest buzz at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas didn’t come from the slimmest of televisions, the most fashionable headphones or even a dancing robot.

The buzz of CES 2013 was firmly centred on all things health and the Digital Health Summit is where the action was happening. On the eve of opening Arianna Huffington described what was about to happen in Las Vegas as a ‘Perfect Storm’ “I’m talking about one of those moments in which several trends converge to create something larger, a moment we will look back on as the time everything changed ….. this year’s CES has the potential to be one of the most transformative ever, and that’s because of a significant change in attitude about what role technology can, and should, be playing in our lives.

That’s the foundation of this perfect storm”. For Huffington the takeaway was simple; So, is the proof in the pudding? Related articles: University of Illinois Wellness Center.
