I had not expected this, just as I had not expected that morning, when I begrudgingly rolled out of my hostel bed at four o’clock, would lead to one of the most memorable and meaningful days of my life.
When Sh*t Hits the Fan: Making Your First Documentary in Morocco. Brianna Celestina’s documentary, Pikala Binatna, follows a young Moroccan named Jamal who pursues his lifelong interest in bicycling and becomes an avid mechanic and mentor.
In his bicycling endeavors, he co-founds a project in his community called Pikala, created to destroy the social stigma associating the poor with bicycles. To capture his story, Brianna and a team of filmmakers travel to Morocco where the documentary does not go as planned and Brianna is forced into new roles with little room for error. So what did it take to capture the subtle and obvious joy of the people of Marrakech in a short but poignant 10-minute documentary? According to the documentary’s director, Brianna Celestina, first and foremost, patience in a foreign land and patience among your team is a firm start. Oregon native Malia Riggs ’19 said the reason for the trip was to work with Actuality Media, an organization that produces documentaries about “stories that matter” in just a four-week period. Riggs’, a Journalism and Media Studies major, is a former photo editor for the Linfield Review but had no prior experience with video. Since 2011, Actuality Media has run Documentary Outreaches to take students and emerging filmmakers to developing communities around the world where they create short documentary films that focus on changemakers working to solve social or environmental issues.
Each year Actuality Media chooses new locations and new changemakers to work with. In 2017, Documentary Outreaches programs are scheduled for Nepal, Peru, Nicaragua and Morocco. Actuality Media, a social enterprise, was started with the idea of telling the world about awesome, inspiring stories that would otherwise be unknown, and to push new documentary filmmakers in the direction of telling powerful, positive stories that can change the world.
Documentary Outreaches are run as study abroad programs. The team finds changemakers who are both deserving of attention and who can benefit from being the subject of a short documentary telling their story. The films are distributed online, submitted to festivals and sometimes shown on TV. Local film shines light on pedal-power technology in Guatemala. Following a life-changing medical diagnosis, Reina Molino decided to focus on community impact to leave her legacy in her home country El Salvador.
She then ventured out to Guatemala to study bike-powered technology, a decision that would also impact Orlando resident Maxime Jean-Louis, who traveled there to document her journey. Animation, documentaries and scripted stories fill the lineup at the 25th Annual Brouhaha Film & Video Showcase. Fifty-nine shorts make up four programs at the Saturday and Sunday festival at the Enzian in Maitland. Brouhaha celebrates local filmmakers, especially those at schools. There are 17 movies from Florida State University, eight from the University of Central Florida, five apiece from Trinity Preparatory School and Full Sail University and three each from Winter Park High School and Daytona State College.
