Sound Design of Star Wars

Ben Burtt was a film sound buff as a child (he recorded and replayed the sound tracks of his favorite movies) Burtt enrolled at the university of Southern California's film school with the intention of becoming a director. He received a student job cataloguing the Columbia sound library, which had been donated to the University. A call by Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz to U.S.C. led to a successful interview for Burtt. He was given carte blanche to work out of his apartment near the U.S.C. campus in order to collect at a leisure pace those sounds that might be useful. He spent a year recording anything that could be turned upside down and backwards to make Lucas world come alive. Footsteps post-production sound inc. Creating "real" sounding Foley is about having the right prop, performing the effect accurately and recording it in the correct acoustic space. Foley covers an incredibly wide range of sounds that are added to a film during post-production; everything from falling debris to footsteps, to garment rustles, to cutlery clinks, sloshing water, sword hits, kissing... you name it. The location sound recordist's main job is to clearly record the dialogue. Film sets are noisy places and many of the sound effects required for the film are too specific to be recorded in conjunction with the dialogue. In order to create comprehensive and rich sounds, each element of the sound must be distinct, and individually controllable. Film sets and many film props are traditionally constructed of very different materials than they are made to portray. Geräuschemacher – Foley Artist.

The best foley art is so well integrated into a film that it goes unnoticed by the audience.[2] It helps to create a sense of reality within a scene. Without these crucial background noises, movies feel unnaturally quiet and uncomfortable. Foley artists recreate the realistic ambient sounds that the film portrays. The props and sets of a film do not react the same way acoustically as their real life counterparts.[2] Foley sounds are used to enhance the auditory experience of the movie. The term "Foley" is also used to describe a place, such as Foley-stage or Foley-studio, where the Foley process takes place. Imagine yourself in a movie theater. You’re watching a scary movie with an actress walking down a deserted hallway in an old abandoned house. Her footsteps echo on the ancient dusty wood floor, and the door makes an eerie creaking noise as she slowly opens it… Now, stop and think. Do you think those footsteps that you hear are really hers? Foley art is the process of creating sound effects with everyday objects, and adding them to movies and television productions. Jack Foley is said to be the father of Foley art, to such an extent that this type of sound manipulation was actually named after him. Although many of the techniques that Foley used to create his sound effects were rather crude and seemingly primitive, many of them are still used in film production today.
