BBC's Ten Pieces extends classical music programme to teenagers. The Ride of the Valkyries, the most famous part of Wagner’s Ring cycle, is to be used as part of a nationwide programme to encourage teenagers to fall in love with classical music. Once used to devastating effect as the soundtrack to a helicopter attack on a Vietnamese village in the 1979 film Apocalypse Now, the Ride of the Valkyries will be blasted out in the school halls and classrooms of the UK’s secondary schools. It is one of the BBC’s Ten Pieces programme, which last year attempted to introduce a generation of primary school children to classical music, and this year will be extended to pupils in secondary schools.

The programme also includes Verdi (Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum from Requiem); Bizet’s Carmen (Habanera and Toreador Song); Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto; Shostakovich’s Symphony No 10; and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. “It empowers children to understand their own identity and emotions. A Child’s Introduction to Jazz by Cannonball Adderley (with Louis Armstrong & Thelonious Monk)

In 1961, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, the jazz saxophonist best known for his work on Miles Davis’ epic album Kind of Blue, narrated a children’s introduction to jazz music. Part of a larger series of educational albums for children, this 12-inch LP offered an “easy-going, conversational discussion of the highlights of the jazz story,” highlighting the “major styles and great performers” that began in New Orleans and spread beyond.

Included on the album are some legendary jazz figures — Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Jelly Roll Morton, Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins, Sidney Bechet, Thelonious Monk, and, of course, Cannonball himself. The album, A Child’s Introduction to Jazz, has long been out of circulation. But you can catch it on YouTube, or above. Thanks to James for telling us about this album on our Facebook page. Newly Discovered Piece by Mozart Performed on His Own Fortepiano. A music scholar made an astounding discovery recently while going through the personal belongings from the attic of a recently deceased church musician and band leader in the Lech Valley of the Austrian Tyrol. Combing through the dead man’s collection of old music manuscripts, Hildegard Herrmann-Schneider of the Institute for Tyrolean Music Research noticed a hand-written book with the date “1780″ on the cover.

On pages 12 to 14 she found an unidentified sonata movement with the tempo mark “allegro molto,” Italian for “very quickly.” On the upper right-hand side of page 12 was written “Del Signore Giovane Wolfgango Mozart,” or “The young Wolfgango Mozart.” “Wolfgango” was a name Mozart’s father, Leopold, called him when he was a boy.

Looking further into the manuscript, Herrmann-Schneider found several pieces that were already known to have been written by Leopold Mozart. Those compositions were respectfully marked “Signore Mozart,” or “Lord Mozart.” via @MatthiasRascher. League of Legends Theme Song (Violins) GAME BOY MUSIC (but not the kind you're thinking of)
