How the Pyramids Were Really Built ... A Working Theory - NextStop Magazine

I'm really interested to see it stand up to some real scrutiny but at first glance, it's hard to argue with. I've always been fascinated with the wonders of the ancient world and how they were constructed. One thing I've always thought important to note is that, even though there was a much smaller base of knowledge to build off of even as much as 100 years ago (let alone thousands of years ago), it doesn't mean there was a shortage of brilliant people that were able to innovate and build upon the knowledge of the day. 4 years + 1 animator + a ton of dedication = one of a kind stop motion sci-fi. Takahide Hori devoted 4 years of his life to create this 30-minute long, independent stop-motion animation, titled Junk Head 1.

He crafted it in his spare time, with a very low budget, entirely on his own. It is obviously a passion project and what is even more interesting, it is not just an ordinary story, but a dystopian sci-fi. Color Test - Online Color Challenge. Wait but why: Putting Time In Perspective.

Humans are good at a lot of things, but putting time in perspective is not one of them.

wait but why: Putting Time In Perspective

It’s not our fault—the spans of time in human history, and even more so in natural history, are so vast compared to the span of our life and recent history that it’s almost impossible to get a handle on it. If the Earth formed at midnight and the present moment is the next midnight, 24 hours later, modern humans have been around since 11:59:59pm—1 second. And if human history itself spans 24 hours from one midnight to the next, 14 minutes represents the time since Christ. To try to grasp some perspective, I mapped out the history of time as a series of growing timelines—each timeline contains all the previous timelines (colors will help you see which timelines are which).

All timeline lengths are exactly accurate to the amount of time they’re expressing. Tim Minchin’s Storm: Critique of alternative medicine and defense of reason, in song. Liz Moskowitz Photography. Wine tasting is bullshit. Here's why. Time-Lapse Video of San Francisco Fog Rolling In. OK, before you start in on your first afternoon BART-less commute, take a few deep breaths and watch this time-lapse video, posted today, of fog pouring in and rolling over the San Francisco Bay Area ….

Time-Lapse Video of San Francisco Fog Rolling In

The video is called “Adrift” and its creator, Oakland photographer Simon Christen, writes this about its creation: “Adrift” is a love letter to the fog of the San Francisco Bay Area. I chased it for over two years to capture the magical interaction between the soft mist, the ridges of the California coast and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge ….The weather conditions have to be just right for the fog to glide over the hills and under the bridge. I developed a system for trying to guess when to make the drive out to shoot, which involved checking the weather forecast, satellite images and webcams multiple times a day. Good luck out there. An Oakland photographer made the video “Adrift” as a love letter to the Bay Area. Related Explore: fog Category: Arts and Entertainment, San Francisco, Weather.

The Aphex Face. A long time ago — in the summer of 2001 if I recall correctly — I ran into an intriguing page at (Chaosmachine’s more recent page can be found at blamcast.net).

The Aphex Face

The original page, which sadly resides only in the web archives nowadays, was all about this hidden “demon face” in one of Aphex Twin‘s tracks, #2 (the long formula) on “Windowlicker”. This face was supposed to be viewable with a spectrograph program, so I decided to try it myself. A spectrograph basically visualizes the sound spectrum. First I needed to extract the track from the Windowlicker CD, which was easy with CDex. The extraction of the whole track was not really necessary because the “face” is situated at the very end of the track, starting from the 5:27 mark and lasting for about 10 seconds. World's 10 weirdest medical museums. With its vast array of freaky specimens that seem to belong in some haunted manor, Philadelphia's 150-year-old Mutter Museum may be the gold standard in medical museums.

But it's not alone. Museums dedicated to niche medicine, pathology, anatomical curiosities and cultural trends keep visitors fascinated and appalled with their educational and grotesque displays. Rare earth magnets for fun and profit. One can academically appreciate the fact that every electric motor in the world (not counting a couple of very impractical ones) works because of magnetism.

One can reflect on the fact that every transformer uses it, too. CRT monitors, TVs, brushless DC motors, power meters, modern welding gear and engine ignition timing systems, various vending machines and umpteen other gadgets use permanent magnets. And electromagnetism has a hand somewhere in making practically every other electronic device work.
