Most of the directories were published annually. This makes them a valuable resource, especially for the years not covered by the census which, starting in 1841, was only carried out every 10 years. Search term sampson matches the same as Sampson Exact search phrases, such as street addresses, should be entered in quotes, for example "71 Federal" Using underscore between words is treated as exact phrasing as well: "71 federal" in quotes is functionally the same search phrase as 71_federal Exact phrase searching is faster. Address records do not include the term "street" or its abbreviation "st", so it can be left out of the search query as well. Enter multiple search terms to restrict search results. Search keywords OR and AND (entered in uppercase) are treated as conditional operators.
Digitized Brooklyn City Directories. We have digitized 31 years of Brooklyn city and business directories, covering a period from 1856 to 1908.
Most of these were printed by the J. Lain Company of Brooklyn, and include not only listings of citizens but also street guides, advertisements, and listings for government agencies and social services. We also have microfilm copies of directories spanning from 1796 to 1986.
