The Time George Pataki (Now a Presidential Hopeful) Accused an Artist of “Denigrating America”

Detail of “A Glimpse of What Life in a Free Country Could Be Like” (2004) by Amy Wilson featured in ‘Daily News’ article (photo by the author for Hyperallergic) I tuned into the early Republican debate last week, and couldn’t get the sound to work on my computer.

Silently, I watched them all talking, until the camera finally hit George Pataki. Joy Harjo. Joy Harjo was born in 1951 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Native American and Canadian ancestry.

Joy Harjo

Strongly influenced by her Muskogee Creek heritage, feminist and social concerns, and her background in the arts, Harjo frequently incorporates Native American myths, symbols, and values into her writing. Her poetry tends to emphasize the Southwest landscape and need for remembrance and transcendence. Dermis — Juan Miguel Palacios. Lisa Yuskavage on Painting, Proverbs, and Grindr. Lisa Yuskavage on Painting, Proverbs, and Grindr

Photo by EJ Camp, courtesy the artist and David Zwirner, New York/London Since her arrival on the art scene some twenty-five years ago, Lisa Yuskavage has made a name for herself with paintings that use classical techniques to depict unabashedly taboo subjects. Her creations—awash in radiant, hallucinatory colors and featuring hedonistic heroines unlike anything else in art today—are instantly identifiable. Her latest show, which opened last week at David Zwirner in New York, explores the idea of the incubus and succubus, and includes images of men—Dude Looks Like Jesus, for instance—a first for the artist.
