MIDCAP-New Hope lags Aussie energy sector on analyst revisions

The coal mining company has an Analyst Revision Model (ARM) score of 5, the lowest in the sector, and a low SmartHoldings (SH) score of 10. The low SH score suggests a potential decline in institutional ownership. The company's free cash flow declined from A$8 million to a negative of A$27 million between July 2011 and July 2012. However, the net profit after tax excluding non-recurring items rose 16 percent during the same period. Analysts' mean EPS estimate for the year ending July 2013 has fallen by 18.9 percent over the last 30 days.

Of the seven analysts tracking the stock, three give it a 'strong buy' rating, three recommend a 'hold' and one has a 'sell' rating. The stock is down 17.18 percent so far this year, while the broader index is up nearly 10 percent, as of Friday's close. Cash flow critical for Eskom. MEDUPI is SA's largest single infrastructure project at more than four times the value of the Gautrain project.

Cash flow critical for Eskom

It is part of Eskom's R340bn new build programme, started in 2005 to boost SA's power-generating capacity by more than a quarter by 2019. Power stations we are building now will be generating power for the next 50 years, and possibly beyond. It makes sense to fund them with long-term debt that can be repaid over the life of those assets. Eskom had R182bn of gross debt on its balance sheet at end-March. That will increase over the next three years to over R300bn as we ramp up spending on our new build programme. So it is critical that Eskom will be able to generate cash required to pay the interest on debt and repay capital in the long term, but also that it is in a position to service debt in the near term.

Eskom will need strong cash flows. If Eskom were to be rated simply on its own financial merits its rating would be well below investment grade. The Medupi power stattion.
