Ellen and Amy Volunteer in Quito, Ecuador. Ellen and Amy Volunteer in Quito, EcuadorReviewed by Admin on Mar 6Rating: We are medical students from Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine located in Colorado in the United States.
Our host mother & ABV Coordinator, Laura Cordoba, would like us to provide some information about the work we have been doing here in Ecuador. Our first week in Ecuador, we worked with abused and neglected children in one of the orphanages here in Quito. We observed children with fetal alcohol syndrome and those with reactive attachment disorder. We very much enjoyed caring and teaching these children during the week.
Our last week in Ecuador, we volunteered at a women’s shelter for those who have been abused, those that have been taken from their homes, and those with addiction. This was my second trip to Uganda with ABV and it was awesome to continue to foster the relationships with the orphans and other people in the community. Jock Volunteer Abroad in Kpando Ghana. Jock Volunteer Abroad in Kpando GhanaReviewed by Admin on Feb 7Rating: My Favorite Memory: Really hard to choose just one… but I think it was helping the kids with homework and reading at the end of the day.
I was surprised that…. Everyone was very friendly and humble despite their comparatively meager situation The most difficult thing I experienced was…. meeting an HIV positive woman who hid in a room for 3 years for fear of being shunned by the community. People thought she had died. My best received lesson… Appreciate the little things in your life, because there are people in Ghana doing more with the little that they have than some in America who have so much. Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc) Come with an open mind and no expectations.

Dr. Camille Bentley DO Volunteer Abroad in Nepal Medical Mission Trip. How would you describe your experience working with the ABV staff, both in the US and in Nepal.
Excellent. Info provided prior to our departure was helpful, and Scott, Sunita and all the people in Nepal were just fantastic. We all felt very welcomed , safe and well cared for while there. How would you describe your overall experience? Chantelle Volunteer Abroad in Hanoi, Vietnam. Shannon Volunteer in Mombasa, KenyaReviewed by Admin on Jul 11Rating: My Favorite Memory: The simple things, catching butterflies, moths, and grasshoppers with the children.
Going on a trip to Nairobi with the school’s futbol team and playing in the fields for hours. The ferry rides to and from work were always very relaxing. I was surprised that….: The culture in itself. at first I felt like everyone was walking to close to me, not giving me my personal space. Laurisa Volunteer in Bulenga, Uganda.
Laurisa Volunteer in Bulenga, UgandaReviewed by Admin on Jan 30Rating: My Favorite Memory: My favorite memory would have to be being chosen as the godmother of Sam (an ABV coordinator) child who is due in April.
My other favorite memory is being able to bond with the children of Good Hope and getting to know them. I was surprised that…. to live comfortably and be happy I actually needed very little and that my laptop was not a necessity! The most difficult thing I experienced was….The most difficult thin for me was realizing how far from home I actually was and becoming comfortable with that. My best received lesson… The best lesson I received was seeing how high-spirited and happy all the children at the orphanage were even though they literally had only the clothes on their backs. Personal Paragraph (Testimonial): I had an amazing time in Uganda and I feel like the trip has had a huge impact on my life. Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers? Therry Volunteer Abroad in Arusha, TanzaniaReviewed by Admin on Sep 5Rating: My Favorite Memory: On my last day, the kids performed for me as a way to say thank you and that I will be missed, that was very cute and sweet.

Amy Volunteer Abroad in Volta Region, GhanaReviewed by Admin on Jul 11Rating: My Favorite Memory: at the special school when all of the students started singing and dancing for me one morning I was surprised that….the whole culture was laid back and relaxed (the afternoon was always a time to just rest) The most difficult thing I experienced was….seeing children get caned.
They don’t do it at the special school, but i still saw mothers in the community caning their kids. My best received lesson… To get away from the fast paced life once in a while and enjoy time that you can spend with others (especially children). Gareth Volunteer Abroad in Bulenga, Kampala. My Favorite Memory:This is a difficult question but I think I would say going down the hill next to the church and the water pump. Losts of people were carrying their water in the opposite direction.
Music was playing in the church and the sun was setting. People were waving and smiling at me as they passed. It was very “African”. I was surprised that….I was given a class of 13 year olds to teach for a week without any prior teaching experience and after only half an hour of reading a maths book. Courtney Volunteer in Mtongwe, Kenya, Africa. Courtney Volunteer in Mtongwe, Kenya, AfricaReviewed by Admin on Dec 22Rating: My Favorite Memory: My favorite memory at DGS was teaching Class Five about [eye] pupils.
They didn’t believe that the pupils constricted and dilated because their irises are so dark and they cannot see the size changes. I went around to their desks and closed and opened my [light-colored] eyes so they could see my pupils shrink when I opened my eyes. I don’t think I have EVER seen them laugh so hard. They thought it was so funny they were literally rolling on the classroom floor with laughter. Zach Volunteer Abroad in Cusco, Peru. Zach Volunteer Abroad in Cusco, PeruReviewed by Admin on Dec 27Rating: My Favorite Memory: spending time with my hosts, Doris and Victor laughing and talking I was surprised that….I was able to manage The most difficult thing I experienced was…. the first week and the kids disrespect for me.
My best received lesson… hearing Doris tell me about all her life lessons Tip for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations, sightseeing etc) Personal Paragraph (Testimonial): I don’t know what to say really…..I loved every minute of my time here and I feel like Cusco has become my home away from home. How would you describe your accommodation ( ie: host family, on-site, shared housing etc) 10/10 good. thumbs up. Jin Volunteer Abroad in Cusco, Peru. Jin Volunteer Abroad in Cusco, PeruReviewed by Admin on Feb 23Rating: My Favorite Memory: After I had been at the clinic for about one week, one of the girls that lived there asked me if today was my last day. I told her that I would be there for the whole month and she hugged me very sweetly and said, “Buena amiga.” She was 6 years old. Another great memory was when it was extremely sunny out one day. I took some of the girls outside to sit in the sun before dinner.

My Favorite Memory: When I first arrived at the clinic and was introduced to the children, many of them remembered my name and were proud to demonstrate each day that they had. Those who didn’t, however, were perfectly happy to exclaim “Amiga!”
Upon my arrival each day. Lanueres Volunteer in Cuzco, Peru. Heiley Volunteer in Cusco, Peru. Morgan Volunteer Abroad in Cusco, Peru. My Favorite Memory: There have been so many amazing memories here in Cusco. I would definitely have to say when my friend and I volunteered at the orphanage we became very close to the girls. We first did not know what to expect when volunteering with teenage girls but the love I felt each time I walked in the door was incredible.
