How Habits Work - Charles Duhigg. From the appendix to The Power of Habit: The difficult thing about studying the science of habits is that most people, when they hear about this field of research, want to know the secret formula for quickly changing any habit. If scientists have discovered how these patterns work, then it stands to reason that they must have also found a recipe for rapid change, right? If only it were that easy. It’s not that formulas don’t exist. Individuals and habits are all different, and so the specifics of diagnosing and changing the patterns in our lives differ from person to person and behavior to behavior. As a result, this book doesn’t contain one prescription. But that doesn’t mean it can’t occur. Change might not be fast and it isn’t always easy. Identify the routine Experiment with rewards Isolate the cue Have a plan The MIT researchers in Chapter One discovered a simple neurological loop at the core of every habit, a loop that consists of three parts: A cue, a routine and a reward.

The Importance of Reading Oh no, it’s like 3rd grade all over again! Behind the scenes at Focal, France (part 2) We've been in France to visit speaker manufacturer Focal, and as you can read in our first blog, the company makes its high-end models in its factory in Bourbon Lancy. During the second part of our visit, we went to the firm's drive unit factory based in St Etienne (below). Focal is rare among its rivals in that it builds all its home audio drive units in-house. It’s also unusual in optimising each drive unit for the speaker it’s going in, rather than using the same unit across a range, as most speaker manufacturers tend to do. In-house production gives it the capability to do so. In theory at least, this should give it a strong performance advantage.
Bearing in mind Focal’s obsession with drive unit technology, it comes as no surprise to learn the company started off as a drive unit manufacturer, only building complete speakers later. The factory doubles as home to the R&D department too, as well as the company’s in-car division and Pro-audio operation. The speaker manufacturing process.

Rosebush | 9:06 AM March 30, 2012 We’re living with something of an irony right now regarding leadership. On the one hand, the topic has never been more studied and written about; my recent Google search for leadership research by academies and institutes returned some 375,000 hits. On the other hand, we are experiencing a dearth of leadership in society. We see fewer prominent leaders who seem genuine and highly capable, and many who have been compromised, deposed, or defeated. Even more seem to have run out of ideas, or simply appear unable to craft the necessary consensus to lead.
From my own perspective as someone who has had a front-row seat to leadership over a few decades, it isn’t so much that today’s leaders fall short of the capabilities or character leaders had in the past. Privileged access to information. Is it any wonder that the Web became the greatest fear factor of every dictator? The reflected glory of their institutions. Leadership has never been easy. Happiness REsearch. Genes Hold The Key To How Happy We Are, Scientists Say. Happiness in life is as much down to having the right genetic mix as it is to personal circumstances according to a recent study. Psychologists at the University of Edinburgh working with researchers at Queensland Institute for Medical Research in Australia found that happiness is partly determined by personality traits and that both personality and happiness are largely hereditary.
Using a framework which psychologists use to rate personalities, called the Five-Factor Model, the researchers found that people who do not excessively worry, and who are sociable and conscientious tend to be happier. They suggested that this personality mix can act as a buffer when bad things happen, according to the study published in the March issue of Psychological Science. The researchers used personality and happiness data on more than 900 twin pairs. They identified evidence for common genes which result in certain personality traits and predispose people to happiness.
Happiness Lengthens Life. Happiness does not heal, but happiness protects against falling ill. As a result, happy people live longer. The size of the effect on longevity is comparable to that of smoking or not. This is concluded from an analysis of 30 follow-up studies published in a recent issue of the Journal of Happiness Studies. There have been more reports of happy people living longer, but for long it was unclear whether happiness causes longevity, since it can also be that good health add both to happiness and longevity.
Scientists assess causality using long-term follow-up studies, taking initial health into account. Happiness does not lengthen the life of seriously ill people, but it does prolong the life of healthy people. Another possible mechanism is that happiness adds to the chance of adopting a healthy life style. An implication of this finding is that public health can also be promoted by policies that aim at greater happiness for a greater number. Leadership. Assessments.
