Copyright in architecture in the United States. Copyright in architecture is an important, but little understood subject in the architectural discipline.
Copyright is a legal concept that gives the creator of a work the exclusive right to use that work for a limited time. These rights can be an important mechanism through which architects can protect their designs. History of copyright in architecture[edit] Architecture has not always been covered by copyright law. In 1790, when the first copyright law was passed, copyright was only granted in "books, maps, and charts".[1] In 1909, Congress broadened the scope of copyright protection to include all "writings of an author".[2] Although architectural drawings were not expressly included in the 1909 Act, copyright protection was included under the act for "[d]rawings or plastic works of a scientific or technical nature". Initially, Architecture School was overwhelming, in particular I struggled learning the new design ‘language’, managing the intense studio hours (goodbye to mum and dad for a while) and dealing with the tough criticism. Then there were the ‘super-students’, those who appeared to achieve the unattainable; ‘Supers’ could draw in plan, section AND perspective, not to mention they maintained a superior ability to verbally communicate and sell their ideas. Six years on from this tough beginning I graduated with high distinction, achieving the highest overall aggregated marks of all students, in the subject areas of History, Theory, Construction, Practice and Design.

Le nombre moyen d’inscriptions à l’Ordre par an est de 800, dont 500 nouvellement diplômés. La population professionnelle est principalement concentrée sur quelques régions : l’Ile de France (33 % des inscrits), Rhône-Alpes (10,38%) et PACA (9,22%), Aquitaine (5,68%), Midi-Pyrénées (5,31%), et Languedoc-Roussillon (4,67%), Pays de la Loire (4,06%). La population demeure majoritairement masculine, malgré une population féminine en croissance régulière : 24,7 % des architectes sont des femmes en 2012, contre 7,5% en 1983. Parmi les nouveaux inscrits en 2009, on comptait 39% de femmes.
