A powerful explosion in the middle of our capital, at the heart of Norway. Several people were killed, many more injured, the whole city wounded and marked for ever. An hour later, more than 80 people were brutally killed. They were gathered at a political youth camp on an island. There was nowhere to run, nothing to protect themselves with. From Gaza to Oslo For the past two years I have lived in Gaza, working for a Norwegian humanitarian organisation. Then the bomb rocked the building I was in. I continued until I was standing at the entrance of the main building. The unimaginable I left and started calling people on the phone. In some ways, a bomb attack in a capital, even in Norway, is something most people can imagine and relate to. The morning after, when I heard the number of people killed, I was numbed.

It took investigators several hours to begin to realise the full scope of the massacre, which followed an explosion in Oslo that killed seven and that police say was set off by the same suspect. Police initially said about 10 people were killed at the camp on the island of Utøya, but some survivors said they thought the toll was much higher. Police director Øystein Mæland told reporters early on Saturday they had discovered many more victims. "It's taken time to search the area. What we know now is that we can say that there are at least 80 killed at Utøya," Mæland said. Mæland said the death toll could rise even more. Police spent Friday questioning Brievik. He was transported from Ila prison, a former Nazi concentration camp, to Oslo in an armoured car. Earlier, Oslo district police's attorney Paal-Fredrik Hjort Kraby said Breivik would be questioned on "information received over the last few days - which is a lot". The experts will determine if he is criminally responsible and deliver their report by November 1, according to Mr Kraby, speaking while the 32-year-old was being questioned. The Queen and Prime Minister David Cameron sent their sympathies after a bomb in Oslo killed seven and a gunman shot 85 at an island youth camp. Welsh First Minister Carwyn Jones also wrote to the Norwegian authorities to voice his "horror" and send the sympathies of the people of Wales.
