Tough times for indie labels - Entertainment News, Global Indepe

Majors including Paramount and Warner Bros. have tossed aside or absorbed their indie labels, with the big studios now responsible for marketing and distributing arthouse pics, if any. For those studio specialty arms that remain --Universal's Focus Features, 20th Century Fox's Fox Searchlight, Sony's Sony Pictures Classics and Disney's Miramax -- there have been some box office bright spots, but also clouds. There are rumors that Disney is looking to downsize Miramax in some way, but so far, it's just chatter. Amid U's thorny year at the box office, Focus' fate has also been the object of some speculation, though Focus seems to have fortified its foundation by merging with Universal Pictures Intl.'s production arm. Searchlight has struck box office gold two years in a row, first with "Juno" and then with "Slumdog Millionaire" -- but the label also has seen change. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118008357?refCatId=3720
Sea change. Existential crisis. Transitional moment. These are just some of the terms bandied about to describe the current upheaval in the specialty film sector.

Le cinéma indie pas si en crise que ça

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118008350?refCatId=3720 The video-on-demand business, which barely registered as a revenue stream three years ago, has almost overnight changed the indie distribution business. Viewed as a whole, VOD revenues can be underwhelming and deceiving, expected to near $2 billion across digital services such as iTunes, cable and other outlets this year -- that's just a sliver of the $22.5 billion expected from DVD and Blu-ray, projects Adams Media Research. Yet for a growing number of indie films, VOD has become a crucial revenue source, accounting for as much as 60% of revs for some movies and returning seven-figure checks for the highest-profile indies. "VOD does make up for some of the DVD sell-through decline for smaller indie movies," says Oscilloscope's David Fenkel, who sent "Wendy and Lucy" out on VOD in May via the company's deal with Warner Bros. Digital.

VOD case studies - Entertainment News, Global Independents 2009,

"Dark Mirror" Low-budget supernatural thriller "Dark Mirror" premiered at the New York Latino Film Fest in 2007. Since then, it hasn't played in a single U.S. theater, but it's become the top-selling title in IFC's video-on-demand library, racking up an estimated 110,000-120,000 buys. (Steven Soderbergh's double-feature "Che" beats it, with 150,000-200,000 purchases, but only because it sells in two parts.) Unspooling in IFC's Festival Direct program -- for films that get zero to little theatrical exposure -- "Dark Mirror" was made available for $7 through all the major cable operators starting May 6. Originally slated to end its VOD run on Aug. 4, it was extended due to its popularity. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118008352?refCatId=3720
