A Single Man. Christopher Isherwood. Christopher William Bradshaw Isherwood (26 August 1904 – 4 January 1986) was an English novelist.[1][2] Early life and work[edit] At Repton School, Isherwood met his lifelong friend Edward Upward with whom he wrote the extravagant "Mortmere" stories, of which one was published during his lifetime, a few others appeared after his death, and others he summarised in Lions and Shadows.

He deliberately failed his tripos and left Corpus Christi College, Cambridge without a degree in 1925. For the next few years he lived with violinist André Mangeot, worked as secretary to Mangeot's string quartet and studied medicine. During this time he wrote a book of nonsense poems, People One Ought to Know, with illustrations by Mangeot's eleven-year-old son, Sylvain. In 1925 A.S.T. Rejecting his upper middle class background and embracing his attraction to men, he remained in Berlin, the capital of the young Weimar Republic, drawn by its reputation for sexual freedom. Life in the United States[edit] After Many a Summer. Plot summary[edit] Cover of the US mass-market paperback The action revolves around a few characters brought together by a Hollywood millionaire, Jo Stoyte.

After Many a Summer

Each character represents a different attitude toward life. Stoyte, in his sixties and conscious of his mortality, finds himself in deep contemplation of life. Enlightenment eludes him, though, as he is ruled by his fears and cravings. ... every individual is called on to display not only unsleeping good will but also unsleeping intelligence. This is essentially Huxley's own position. Dr Obispo places great faith in science and medicine as saviours of humankind. Characters[edit] JeremyMr. Major themes[edit] These characters expose questions and answers depicting their various life philosophies until the climax in a Socratic method, while explorations of mortality, eroticism, class struggle, mysticism, and greed are all presented dispassionately throughout. Set in Southern California during 1962, it depicts one day in the life of George, a middle-aged Englishman who is a professor at a Los Angeles university. The university in actuality is CSULA, where Christopher Isherwood was a professor for some time.
