Mad Men may depict the ad world of the 1960s, but the lessons of this successful AMC show depicting the Madison Avenue world of 50 years ago still has a lot of relevance in today’s digital environment of 2010 and beyond. While Don Draper barely respected the world of the television commercial and certainly couldn’t have imagined Wikipedia or Facebook, there is still a lot we can learn — including the mistakes — from the Sterling Cooper team. The Medium is the Message – While a bit anachronistic in the preceding clip, the phrase the medium is the message is even more true over social media. The phrase was introduced in Marshall McLuhan’s most widely known book, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man , published in 1964.
Half the fun of surfing the Internet is stumbling across tasty little Web treats that you never would have thought to look for. Traditional social bookmarking sites like Digg and Delicious are great for finding articles and other text that other Web surfers have tagged as interesting. For the visually oriented, the pickings have been slim. Now, however, a handful of photo-oriented bookmarking sites are emerging to entertain the eye as well as the mind.

I pitched at two Ultra Light Startups events – one in New York and one in Boston – when I was still an inexperienced first-time entrepreneur trying to figure out the right business strategy for CityRover. The ULS experience was invaluable for me because it forced me to formalize my business goals and offerings in order to hone my audience pitch. Second, it taught me how to be comfortable presenting to a sizable audience.
