South by Southwest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
South by Southwest ( SXSW ) is a set of film , interactive and music festivals and conferences that take place every spring (usually in March) in Austin, Texas , United States . SXSW began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. In 2011, the conference lasted for 10 days, with SXSW Interactive lasting for five, Music for six, and Film running concurrently for nine days. South by Southwest is run by a company, called SXSW Inc., that plans and executes conferences, trade shows, festivals and other events. [ 1 ] In addition to the three main South by Southwest festivals, the company runs two other conferences, both also in Austin: SXSWedu, a conference on educational innovation, since 2011; [ 2 ] and SXSW Eco, an environmental conference, since 2012. [ 3 ]
“In the last two days I’ve had better conversations about the technology we’ve developed than I’ve had in the past 2 years in London.” So said one of the UK entrepreneurs on the Digital Mission to me while we shared beers in a bar at one of the myriad events to happen at South By South West Interactive (SXSWi) in Austin Texas. But that doesn’t mean everyone there was firing on all cylinders. SXSW is fairly unique. The majority of content at the event is created by the people attending.

The SXSW PanelPicker allows the community to have a significant voice in programming Interactive, Film, and Music conference activities for SXSWeek 2012 (March 9-18). Listening to the Online Community SXSW is a community-driven event. So, knowing what kinds of topics you want to hear at the event next March is extremely important to us. Your votes and comments account for about 30% of the decision-making process for any given programming slot. Also important is the input of the SXSW Advisory Board, which is a group of industry professionals from across the US and around the world.
