An approach to the character This article contains some thoughts about Corto Maltese, the comic book character created by Hugo Pratt, arising from the course "The Male Archetype in the History of Cinema Genres", given by Dr Núria Bou, on the Doctorate in Audiovisual Communication programme directed by Dr Josep M. Baget i Herms. The story begins when a sailor from Cornwall disembarks in Gibraltar and meets a beautiful gypsy girl from Seville.

Corto's life According to Hugo Pratt, Corto Maltese was born July 10 1887 in La Valetta, Malta, to an Andulasian Gypsy, Amalia, a prostitute known as "la Niña de Gibraltar". Corto Maltese is therefore a British subject. Corto's official residence is Antigua, in the British West Indies, but the only home of his depicted in the series is in Hong-Kong. We learn a little about the childhood of Corto in "Ballad of the Salt Sea", notably that he was living in the Jewish Quarter of Cordoba, Spain at the age of 10. When a fortune-telling friend of his mother read his palm, she noticed that he had no 'Fateline'.

The son of a British sailor and a gypsy Andalusian prostitute, Corto Maltese sails the seas of the early 1900's, adventurer always, treasure hunter on occasion. Whatever the danger or situation, he has a heart of gold and favors the underdog. Legend has it as a teenager a palm reader told him he had no fate line. Corto on the web!
