Private Collection, New York. By Anne Swartz Some feminist artists have used pornography as source material and made it a central part of their works. Such artists as Sylvia Sleigh, Annie Sprinkle, Lisa Yuskavage and E.V. Day have considered and engaged pornography as a liberating force in their works. Ironically, women’s bodies and sexuality have been the locus of recent political debates. Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle, Ecosexual Healing, photograph. While this “war” has been in the news of late, it is really nothing new, as the ideological pendulum has swung to the Right and continued to erode the vast political gains women made in the 1970s.

Strange that those hard-won freedoms should take such a hit in the subsequent decades even as more women counted themselves as feminists and as visual culture became more direct in addressing women’s sexuality both directly and more diversely. A Feminist Defense of Pornography. By Wendy McElroy The following article is from Free Inquiry magazine, Volume 17, Number 4.

A Feminist Defense of Pornography

"Pornography benefits women, both personally and politically. " This sentence opens my book XXX: A Woman's Right to Pornography, and it constitutes a more extreme defense of pornography than most feminists are comfortable with. I arrived at this position after years of interviewing hundreds of sex workers. Feminist Positions Feminist positions on pornography currently break down into three rough categories.

Pornography Can Be Empowering to Women on Screen

" The popular rhetoric about pornography as violent, degrading, and harmful to women and society ignores the diverse ways that women actually interact with it. As a researcher of the porn industry for the past decade, I have interviewed dozens of performers and have found a much more varied picture of pornography in women’s lives than characterized by antiporn activists. For some performers, pornography is a path to college and out of poverty. For others, it is a chance to make a statement about female pleasure. African-American women – and women and men of color in general – are paid half to three-quarters of what white actresses are paid. Does Pornography Treat Women as Objects? Think of the way you would normally treat a human being.

Does Pornography Treat Women as Objects?

You might see her as a person with unique needs, goals, emotions, maybe even lofty plans for the future. Now think of the way that you might treat a mere object: Say, a table. You would not think of the table as having any sort of mind at all. It would not have any needs, any thoughts or goals, any emotions of any kind. A question now arises about how to understand the impact that pornography has on the way men think about women. But is this hypothesis actually correct? To address this question, Kurt Gray, Mark Sheskin, Paul Bloom, Lisa Feldman Barrett and I ran a series of studies. Within each condition, participants were asked to judge the degree to which she was capable of self control, planning and acting morally (what we called agency) and also about the degree to which she was capable of feeling fear, feeling desire and feeling pleasure (what we called experience).
