Reclaimed Farmhouse Beams Made Into Eclectic "Farmpunk" Furniture. Photos: Unite Two Design For those who find the relentless uniformity of modern, mass-produced furniture tedious (and not to mention environmentally unfriendly), there's always the option of furnishings that are made from recycled materials, like these pieces by the resourceful American trio Unite Two Design. Combining unlikely elements of rustic with the industrial, Unite Two Design's distinctive furniture is handcrafted from farm beams that are reclaimed locally, and odds and ends of industrial machinery. Calling their unique, juxtaposed style "farmpunk", it's cool to see that sometimes each component can hail from different centuries altogether. According to their website, their inspiration comes from being creative with what's at hand: In the beginning we embraced the philosophy of use what you have or find and create with it, which shows true ingenuity. This creative reconciliation between rustic and industrial is apparent in all their work.

Like this? Lofted Forest Home: Organic Curves & Natural Materials. Good things come to those who wait – particularly in a work of uniquely detailed and highly curved architecture. Nearly a decade in the making, this structure by Robert Harvey Oshatz is much like a tree house – lofted toward the top of the canopy around it – only bigger, grander, more complex and curved than most any tree house in the world. The perimeter of the structure is pushed out into the forest around it, curving in and out to create views as well as a sense of intimacy with the coniferous and deciduous tree cover. The wood and metal detailing is incredible in its variety and customization – each piece designed to fit a particular form and function. Wood and stone carry naturalistic themes from the outside in and even the metal looks naturally rusted.

The curved, organic mix of materials continues to the interior of this elevated forest home – a conceptual play on the fluidity and complexity of music (the source of inspiration for the architect and client in the design). The Book Surgeon (15 pieces) Using knives, tweezers and surgical tools, Brian Dettmer carves one page at a time. Nothing inside the out-of-date encyclopedias, medical journals, illustration books, or dictionaries is relocated or implanted, only removed. Dettmer manipulates the pages and spines to form the shape of his sculptures. He also folds, bends, rolls, and stacks multiple books to create completely original sculptural forms. "My work is a collaboration with the existing material and its past creators and the completed pieces expose new relationships of the book’s internal elements exactly where they have been since their original conception," he says. "The richness and depth of the book is universally respected yet often undiscovered as the monopoly of the form and relevance of the information fades over time. The book’s intended function has decreased and the form remains linear in a non-linear world.

Dettmer is originally from Chicago, where he studied at Columbia College. Brian Dettmer's website. How to grow a Rainbow Rose, Naturally. In 2004, two dutch companies, River Flowers and F.J. Zandbergen, experimented and successfully grew a rose that had its petals rainbow colored. As petals get their nourishment through stem, the idea is to split the stem into several channels and dip each one in a different colored water. This way all the colors will be drawn by the stem into petals and resultant rose will have all the colors in it. The same method can be applied to other flowers especially to Chrysanthemum and Hydrangea. You can use the same idea to color any flower, anyway you like. When George Lailey died in 1958 a craft going back more than 2000 years died with him. He was the last person in England to make a living turning wooden bowls on a foot powered pole lathe.

In medieval times nearly everybody in Britain ate from wooden bowls every day. They were beautiful, functional bowls that linger on in memories of Goldilocks but were killed off by the industrial revolution and cheap pottery. I became fascinated by the craft whilst working in woodland conservation and set about reviving the lost technique, first learning the blacksmithing skills I needed to forge the specialised turning tools. Like the old turners I use no sandpaper relying entirely on the sharpness of my tools to get a clean cut finish.

Bowls made in this way have a very distinctive character with the marks of the tools being clearly visible, like hand thrown pottery or blown glass. December 15th 2008 was exactly fifty years since the ‘last bowlturner’ George Lailey died aged 89. More of the Craft. Oliver Vernon. Van Gogh Painting is a Vertical Green Wall. Photo: B. Alter It's the first living painting in London's Trafalgar Square, and maybe the first anywhere. A Van Gogh picture has been turned into a green living vertical wall. Depicting Van Gogh's painting, A Wheatfield with Cypresses, it's a new way to draw people into the National Gallery to see the real thing. Photo: National Gallery: A Wheatfield, with Cypresses 1889 The living painting has been constructed by a horticulture and design company which specialises in green walls and roofs.

They also did the recently installed living wall in the hotel which bills itself as the "largest vertical wall in Europe. " They used over 8,000 plants of 25 different varieties. It took 3 days to install the wall which forms part of a hoarding outside the gallery. 'A Wheatfield, with Cypresses' was painted in September 1889, when Van Gogh was in the St-Rémy mental asylum, near Arles, where he was a patient from May 1889 until May 1890. 12989u.jpg (JPEG Image, 760x1152 pixels) - Scaled (49%) Julie Heffernan. From Julie Heffernan’s Constructions of Self Julie Heffernan creates sensuous figurative painting, like co-Yale MFAS, John Currin and Linda Yuskavage, but her luminous oils are patently unique among them and most working artists today. A Victorian impetus to conjoin, edging toward pastiche, creates artfully staged Surrealist environments. They avoid the mawkish or macabre by virtue of an evocative 17th century Baroque styling and the dignity with which she handles her primary subject, herself.

Good construction is essential to the success of such works, built of disparate things suggesting disparate philosophies and ages. Yet the finished product is seamless, making it easy for the viewer to willfully suspend disbelief in the face of rampant artifice. Crystal Enamel Drinking Glasses. My kids are old enough that we can all use glass to drink out of now. However, it seems they haven’t outgrown using a million cups everyday to drink from. There’s always a sink full of glasses because they take a new one whenever they get a drink. I thought about doing monograms or even names, but I really wanted a set of drinking glasses that were more stylish and grown up.

So instead, I went with the color code system. It all started with this box of drinking glasses I bought at the thrift store for $3.54. The set includes 6 tall glasses and 6 short glasses. In case you’re wondering how I got this pretty effect, I used DecoArt’s new Crystal Gloss Enamels. They dry clear and were perfect for this project! Then I added decorations by dipping the handle end of my paintbrush into the enamels and dotted them onto the glasses. I created flowers using this method as well. They need to dry for 48 hours.

Then after 48 hours, you place them into a cold oven. Zombie T-Shirts. Moving Mandalas and Geometric Animations from Light Weaver. Halloween Light Show 2011 - This Is Halloween. 21 Raw and Stunningly Realistic 3D Character Models. Most of us are intrigued by the amazing graphical character designs of our all-time favourite animated movies like the Shrek, Monster Inc., Ice Age etc. In fact, CG (Computer Graphics) character designs for computer games makes up an integral part of the gaming process. Much as we often take for granted these creatively detailed designs, there is always a tedious behind-the-scene effort needed to make this characters come ‘alive’ by first creating an animated 3D model. The CG characters you are about to see are created with powerful 3D tools like ZBurhs, 3DMax, Photoshop, etc.

In order to appreciate the beauty of our favorite on-screen characters, one should see how the 3D models are first created. In essence, it is analogous to the molding of the characters before we give life to them through animation. We hope this list will give you a greater understanding on the complexity of making 3D CG characters. Troll | DankatcherThis is a Troll I made Using Zbrush and Maya. Tauren | NeoGeoAes.
