I’m Peter Aronson. KIM GREEN: And I’m Kim Green. The past few years have been a bad time for earthquakes. KIM: Turkey, Japan, Haiti, Sichuan — to name a few. More than 425 thousand people died in those temblors, and that’s just since 2008. PETER: Our next guest, Dr. DR. PETER: She should know. DR. PETER: How did you get started in all this? DR. PETER: Wow, we really tend to think of earthquake deaths as natural disasters, but you’re saying earthquake deaths, by and large, are a man-made problem. DR. KIM: That’s great. DR. PETER: Can you talk a little bit about what actually happens to a house or residential building in an earthquake? DR. DR. KIM: That’s, like, a really big rubber band. PETER: You’re so literal sometimes! KIM: Out of dice?

The remote corner of Pakistan flattened by an earthquake

Mashkel, Balochistan The remoteness and inaccessibility of Mashkel has hampered the relief effort The worst affected area of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake which hit south-western Pakistan on Tuesday is the dust-strewn town of Mashkel, located just a few kilometres from the Iranian border in the province of Balochistan. Mostly made up of narrow streets, date trees and mud houses, the paramilitary Frontier Corps have a strong presence here as they do in the rest of the province. And it was the Frontier Corps which found itself at the forefront of the violent tremors which flattened much of the town. Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Arif is the officer in charge of the area, and saw his headquarters collapse before his eyes. "My residence is on a small hill. "It was a terrible sight which I can never forget. " No shelter Mashkel has been left in ruins by the quake Since Tuesday, small aftershocks have continued to hit the area.

Building for earthquake resilience. + Base isolation reduces rebuilding costs after earthquakes, minimises the cost of damage to building contents and may enable buildings to be used without interruption during a seismic event.

Building for earthquake resilience

Base isolation is seismic engineering’s equivalent of seatbelts in cars – and maybe more: it’s a lifesaver and possibly a property saver. That’s why I believe base isolation needs to be made a legal requirement for most new non high-rise buildings in areas at risk from earthquakes. Base isolating a building is an engineering technique that places bearings between a building and the ground to reduce seismic vibrations.

This minimises damage by significantly reducing the forces experienced during an earthquake. The system is already used in countries like the US and Japan to protect historic buildings and vital infrastructure such as bridges and airports. Base isolation is effective on short, stiff structures – most residential units around the world fall into this category. Millions prepare for earthquakes in California. The Big Idea - Safe Houses.
