Pierre Rabhi : COLIBRI : TERRE & HUMANISME : AGROECOLOGIE. Born in rural Algeria, Pierre was raised by his father, but due to economic hardships, was eventually placed with a French Catholic family.

Pierre Rabhi : COLIBRI : TERRE & HUMANISME : AGROECOLOGIE

Growing up in a multicultural environment with strong philosophical beliefs and deep ties to his natural environment, Pierre was forced to interrupt his studies and decided to move to France at the break of the independence war in 1954. He found employment in a car factory and was shocked by how the industry exploited people. Together with his wife, he dreamt of returning to the countryside. His dream seemed suddenly within reach when he met Pierre Richard, a rural doctor and social entrepreneur who was establishing the Cevennes National Park. Inspired by his work and by the beautiful aridity of the Ardèche region, Pierre started a farming apprenticeship. Furthermore, Pierre has launched citizen movements to engage people in concrete causes they can act upon.

BLOOM : SUREXPLOITATION ESPECES MARINES : Claire Nouvian. In her effort(s) to influence practices toward more sustainability all along the fishing industry value chain, Claire has created a system to capture, foster and build a knowledge base of unbiased scientific arguments.

BLOOM : SUREXPLOITATION ESPECES MARINES : Claire Nouvian

To do so, she mobilizes independent researchers in top universities and independent research centers around the globe. Claire engages them in producing and/or sharing independent and critical studies about fishing industry activities, subsidy systems, practices of distributors and consumers, social and environmental impacts, and so on. Much of this research relies on existing data that is never computed in an unbiased way, which allows reducing their cost. Additionally, all research targets specific and action-oriented issues that are not in the focus of other players in the field, such as deep sea fishing or sharks. More interestingly, this campaign has also had a major influence on the practices of other large retail chains. ENERCOOP : Julien Noé. With the opening of the French electricity market in 2004, Julien saw the opportunity to transform consumption behavior and to develop the country’s renewable energy capacity.

ENERCOOP : Julien Noé

In spite of all the barriers and high costs to entry, he launched Enercoop, the first energy production and consumption cooperative. Strategically reaching out to environmentally conscious consumers (through partnerships with citizen organizations, organic retailers and green banks), he mobilized citizens to become shareholders of his non-profit cooperative and purchase electricity produced entirely from renewable sources, with all profits reinvested directly back into the development of additional alternative energy sources.

DEFORESTATION : LUTTE CONTRE : Nicolas Métro. For Nicolas, the problem of deforestation is primarily an economic one, with grave environmental side effects.

DEFORESTATION : LUTTE CONTRE : Nicolas Métro

Planting more trees is thus only the first step toward solving these larger economic issues; it must be paired with additional strategies. In 2005 Nicolas created Kinomé (meaning “eye of the tree” in Japanese) to bring together several approaches aimed at positioning the forest as a viable long-term solution to human development. Nicolas first saw that he had to reverse the paradigm of popular tree planting. By realizing a tree’s full potential, Kinomé shows how intentional tree planting is useful by providing long-term economic opportunities for communities and companies while solving social problems. An important target group for useful tree planting is corporations since they have a huge economic stake in forests.

DOREMI / RENOVATION ANCIEN : Vincent Legrand. Vincent is first structuring trainings for local individual builders.

DOREMI / RENOVATION ANCIEN : Vincent Legrand

The objective is not only to explain energy-efficient renovation techniques but to empower them, give them legitimacy and build a competitive advantage in the energy transition. Through theoretical and practical sessions performed with strategic partner Enertech, a French reference for energy-saving renovation techniques, Vincent equips the builders to renovate effectively, with an ability to “think global”: work with other builders, set up a collective offer, combine know-how and lower costs. To maximize the economic and environmental impacts, Vincent focuses the trainings on renovation techniques that do not require a lot of resources in terms of time of manpower, while ensuring simultaneous work on walls, roofs, floor coverings and carpentry.

Vincent’s organization DORÉMI plays a key role as general coordinator. The entry point for implementing DORÉMI locally is a partnership with regional authorities. PUR PROJECT : Tristan Lecomte. For the past 11 years, Tristan has been on a quest to create pure products that would appeal to consumers while also meeting the highest-possible level of ethics with the lowest environmental impact.

PUR PROJECT : Tristan Lecomte

With his company Alter Eco, he established transparent channels of production and distribution of organic produce, thanks to direct connections to a broad network of 150,000 small producers around the world. Having made fair trade mainstream in France, Tristan remained faced with the carbon impact of his products. In 2005, he started developing an integrated framework to reduce and offset emissions to reach a ZCT. ECOLO CRECHE : Claire Escriva. Changemakers, les acteurs de changement. ROULE MA FRITE 17 : Grégory Gendre.

Since 2007 Grégory has been developing a dynamic system in Oléron, the region where he collects cooking oil, filters it, transforms it into a biofuel, and promotes its local use for the scenic railway or fishing machines.

ROULE MA FRITE 17 : Grégory Gendre

All community stakeholders are involved, share the same values, and are collectively building a virtuous circle where they all gain various economic and communication advantages. Professional members (i.e. restaurants, camping businesses, and oil suppliers) benefit from the free collection of their oil (versus paying 0,23 EUR per litre at the local waste center), access to a cheap biofuel, and advice to globally improve their environmental practices (i.e. reducing cooking temperatures, not using palm oil, and better sorting methods).

They are also able to promote their social responsibility to their clients and partners. Oléron and the surrounding region are now recognized as environmentally innovative and exemplary sites. EUROPEAN RIVER NETWORK : Roberto Epple. The development of the ERN in 1994, constituted the first step of Roberto’s action.

EUROPEAN RIVER NETWORK : Roberto Epple

Initially dealing with four major basins, Roberto quickly understood the need to broaden their scope to increase the base of good ideas and practices. The network accelerated from 2000, with a noticeable expansion to Eastern European countries. Membership in the network is based on a certain number of criteria and is not automatic. Each member is required to be the reference association on their basin, must demonstrate notoriety and has the human resources necessary to participate in varied works of ERN.

TERRE DE LIEN : Jérôme Deconinck. LA RUCHE QUI DIT OUI : Guilhem Chéron. Ruches have sprung up across France, with more than 200 marketplaces created, engaging 15,000 regular customers, and a 700,000€/month turnover.

LA RUCHE QUI DIT OUI : Guilhem Chéron

Guilhem is now reaching out to new territories in France and in Europe, beginning with border regions between France and Italy and France and Spain, and has already received requests from the US. At the foundation of Guilhem’s alternative marketplace is the mobilization of a network of Ruches in cities and towns across France, each led by a community member. Their role is to identify and verify the reliability of and build relationships with local farmers in order to engage them in the local distribution network, while mobilizing consumers in their neighborhoods using advertising and moderating the online community. These local entrepreneurs can make a viable living working part- or full-time on building their Ruche. On the production side, Guilhem ensures that his model’s quality will not be undermined. CHANGEMAKERS.

Everyone a Changemaker. Everyone a Changemaker.
