Watch A Man Dance And Slow Down Time With An Orb Of Light

No one says it moves. It dances. Nuance, a new short by French filmmaker Marc-Antoine Locatelli, takes that turn of phrase and makes it literal, pairing an orb of light with a street dancer in a frenetic choreography of shadow and illumination. The piece came out of a school project at the Beaux-Arts d'Epinal, where Locatelli and his fellow students were asked to imagine how art would continue to evolve. "I began wondering if man would succeed in taming a new kind of music," Locatelli tells Co.Design. In Locatelli's film, a dancer, Lucas Boirat, is seen moving with a ball of light that he can use almost like a photonic mixing board, looping, stretching out, stuttering, and otherwise altering the electronic track that accompanies his movements.

Naturally, all of this was accomplished through animation. From there, he imported the footage into Adobe After Effect to add the animated lights. The finished result is hypnotic. This Mind-Blowing Illusion Sets A New Standard For Mind-Blowing Illusions

To keep you busy while you recover from turkey coma, we're republishing some of our favorite stories from 2013. Enjoy. --Eds “Projection mapping” is the worst, most technical term. Most people’s eyes glaze over when they read it, and that’s a shame, because they never witness the techno-art miracle that it actually is. But whether you’re new to the medium or not, this new short Box--by Bot & Dolly in conjunction with The Creators Project--will absolutely blow your hair back.

So the question remains, what special sauce makes this piece so good? Of course, all of this has been painstakingly choreographed, but we’re already seeing projection mapping work its way into more dynamic live performances (most often in concerts). See more here. [Hat tip: The Creators Project] Bot & Dolly. "Box" explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping on moving surfaces.

Bot & Dolly

The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera. Bot & Dolly produced this work to serve as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration. It is the culmination of multiple technologies, including large scale robotics, projection mapping, and software engineering. We believe this methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations, and define new genres of expression. An Amazing 3-D Light Show You Can Jam With A Mic

No doubt, you’ve already heard that said at least five times today. But in this case, you really do need to watch this video--it’s in that elite, 10% to 20% of videos you “need to watch” that you really need to watch. I promise. It’s the latest music video for musician Jamie Lidell. In it, Lidell sings in front of a stunning cube that glows like a gigantic canvas of right angles.

The effect turns the stage into a seamless digital canvas, all rendered in real space without green screens. “We wanted to make Jamie feel totally in control of the visual, so he could play it almost like he would with his audio equipment,” Flat-e producer Kat Anderson tells Co.Design. So the entire rig is actually controlled by Lidell’s sensor-stuffed mic. It’s an ambitious idea, combining a stage show with a music video, rendering real-world effects that could be far more easily implemented with some post-production fakery. See more here. Info: While collaborating with the geniuses at Bot & Dolly in beautiful San Francisco, Munkowitz was tasked to Design Direct a truly unique piece called BOX..

BOX DEMO - .work

The piece was originally supposed to function as a Technology Demo, but Munkowitz and the team quickly realized it's visual potential and transformed it into a Design and Performance Piece… The resulting short film is a one-of-a-kind visual and technological achievement due to the very special combination of talent and gear behind the doors of the B&D facility... The piece was essentially grounded on the principles of Stage Magic, invoking five of the basic categorizations of Illusionary.. These Categories greatly informed the conceptual and aesthetic foundation and were fused with a graphic design aesthetic heavy in Minimalistic Form and Illuminated Geometry..
