Coop. The Dixie Chicks Here is the story of how I roped my husband into getting me chickens. I was born in Montana, and I suppose ranching and farming are in my blood. But I married a boy from New York, and we now live in a subdivision in North Carolina that's not really a large livestock kinda place. So, after months of my begging and pleading, he finally decided that a few chickens couldn't be THAT much trouble! Carpenter by trade, offered to donate a bunch of scrap materials.
Our little project. October, $500 buckaroos later! It's all done, we are really enjoying our 3 sweet little hens and beautiful brown eggs every morning. Convince him into letting me have a little brown jersey cow :) Chicken Coop. Raised Duplex Chicken Coop Welcome to my chicken coop design and construction page. First some Specifications: Width: 10 ft. Depth: 8 ft. Height: 11 ft. Coop Square Footage: 80 ft2 Run Square Footage: 160 ft2 each run Number of Runs: 2 Style: Raised Duplex with Gabled Roof Here's the frame made out of pressure treated 4x4's, 2x6's, and 2x4's.
Here the walls are framed with 2x4's. Interior walls were covered with 7/16" OSB. At this point we are running way over budget so we scored some free old barn siding from a barn that my brother-in-law was fixing to tear down. Here we have all but the back sided (not shown) and windows and doors cut and hinged. Here is the back side. Here's the interior. I only had enough salvaged barn siding to do the top part of the back. I've used simple latches on each end. And bolt latches for the inside corners. And here they are both open.
I added a cross brace because the doors were sagging and wouldn't close without catching. The run is almost complete. Info. More info. Raising Rabbits for Meat By Crystal Miller If you are looking for a simple way to provide meat for your homestead you might want to consider raising meat rabbits. Rabbit meat is tasty and very good for you.
It is all white meat, has lots of protein, and is lower in fat than chicken, or beef or pork. Plus it is not, in my mind at least, as much of a challenge to raise a rabbit as it is cows or pigs. Rabbits can be raised in your backyard, even in the city! Rabbits are very efficient. Meat rabbits are a certain breed. Feed for rabbits usually consist of commercial pellets that are made of alfalfa and grains such as oats, wheat, barley, etc. Housing for rabbits usually consists of cages or hutches that are up off the ground. For breeding, the doe needs to be about 5 to 6 months old and a buck 6 to 7 months old. Ten to 12 weeks after the rabbits are born they will be ready for butchering. I know in my home the butchering would be something done by my husband.
