An unusual chain letter began circulating on the Internet in January 2004. It included a series of images of street paintings that appear to defy the laws of perspective , to the point that many Internet users who were propagating the chain letter to their friends doubted their authenticity and suspected that the images were digitally-created illusions. The images are in actual fact authentic. They are fine examples of an art form known as anamorphism , in which the picture is distorted so that it assumes a normal appearance when viewed from a specific viewpoint. This is a well-known technique, often employed in film and theatre production to create the illusion of depth.
